September 22 is National Voter Registration Day 2020

Kinston Teens plans event to register voters has a part of the national holiday

WHAT:

At 4:00PM on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, Kinston Teens will host a National Voter Registration Day 2020 event at Holloway Recreation Center as part of a massive nationwide effort to register hundreds of thousands of new voters.

WHY: 

National Voter Registration Day seeks to increase civic participation by encouraging Americans to register to vote and then turn out to vote in record numbers this year. 

“The 2020 election will go down in history as one of the most important elections our country has faced,” said Chris Suggs, 20, founder of Kinston Teens. “As a youth-led organization, we’re excited to spend National Voter Registration Day ensuring that young voters in the Kinston community are registered, ready and informed ahead of the November election.” 

Kinston Teens is partnering with Kinston/Lenoir Parks & Recreation to host the event at Holloway Recreation Center. The event will be a socially-distant community cookout featuring voter registration, free food, and giveaways of facemasks and hand sanitizer. Volunteers will be on-site to help community members register to vote and complete their 2020 Census.

As a non-partisan national holiday, National Voter Registration Day counts on thousands of partners and volunteers across the political spectrum. Started in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote. Americans can register at hundreds of events across the nation and online at NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org. 

Kinston Teens is a nonprofit youth-led organization founded in October 2014 with a mission of empowering young people through service, leadership and civic engagement. In times of crisis and all year long, Kinston Teens organizes youth and adults to respond to pressing issues in Kinston and Lenoir County. Kinston Teens has been registering voters and encouraging participation in this election via social media, community events, and door-to-door canvassing since early spring.
