Young people changing our community!

Digital Equity

Through the East Kinston Neighborhood Hub, we are dedicated to increasing digital equity and closing the digital divide, particularly in East Kinston.

East Kinston, an area just east of downtown Kinston and the focus of our work, has had more difficulty recovering in comparison to other areas of the city. East Kinston was hit hardest by recent hurricanes and struggles to regain its footing as we grapple with issues related to concentrated poverty and crime. This area, one of the main gateways into the city and downtown, could be characterized as dilapidated residences, abandoned structures, outdated and dense public housing, and poorly-maintained vacant lots. The neighborhood is also dramatically underserved by commercial enterprises, resulting in scarce employment opportunities and limited access to goods and services for local residents.

Why digital equity?

We recognize that access to digital resources and skills is essential for educational success, economic mobility, and overall community well-being. Our efforts aim to ensure that all residents have the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age.

Digital Equity Corps

  • The Digital Equity Corps is a cornerstone of our commitment to bridging the digital divide. This initiative, administered by Kinston Teens, focuses on empowering youth and marginalized populations by providing comprehensive training in digital literacy and skills development.

    • Six-Week Training Program: Youth participants, aged 16-24, engage in an intensive training program that covers internet navigation, online safety, basic troubleshooting, and proficiency in commonly used software applications. Participants also receive mentorship and training from local, state, and national tech partners.

    • Digital Equity Ambassadors: Upon completion of the program, participants become digital equity ambassadors, extending their knowledge and support to residents facing digital challenges through 1:1 support or group training sessions.

    • Stipends and Certification: Participants receive stipends for their involvement and a certificate of completion, along with support in finding employment utilizing their digital skills.

  • Applications for the Digital Equity Corps will open soon. You can sign up to receive an email or text message when applications go live!
